Month of June

Canadian Fundraising Challenge

For the month of June, every dollar donated to Women Build through Canada Helps (our online donation platform) gives Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North an entry to win $10,000 towards affordable homeownership for local families. Consider making a donation before June 30 to help us increase their chances. The more you give, the better their chances are to win.

The Mortgage Centre – Your Island Mortgage Team

Angela Zumbo and Laura Legault (The Mortgage Centre) are joined by Andrea Davis (Royal LePage), and community-minded retirees Megan Desjardins and Sharon Malone. This ambitious team has planned not one but two initiatives: a burger and a beer night and a bottle drive.

Griffin Pub

Burger & Beverage at The Griffin Pub, Sun., June 17th, 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Enjoy a burger and a beer (or other beverage) for $25 per person. Live entertainment featuring Billy Mac, Kenny Shaw, and Valori Schaefer.  Hourly 50/50 draws. Learn more here.

The Lake Trail Gals  Keychains and yummy homemade pies!

Saturday, June 23, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Comox Valley Farmers' Market

This fundraiser really measures up … and tastes good, too! Thanks to the Lake Trail Gals Team for ordering these nifty house-shaped measuring tapes to raise their $1,000 for Women Build. With a minimum $5 donation, one of these can be yours.

This team is also baking pies. Yes, yummy homemade fruit pies for just $10 each. To order your pie(s) or pick up some measuring tapes give them a call or visit them at the Farmers' Market on June 23.

This team is comprised of a group of volunteers from Lake Trail Community Connections. Team Captain Jude Agione says, "The new Courtenay build is right across the street from lake Trail Community School. We are absolutely thrilled to have this Habitat build in our neighbourhood and we look forward to meeting these new families."

Contact Jude at 250-927-1590 or email her to place an order.

she nailed it

She Nailed It! Team – Online Auction

This team is comprised of five Comox Valley businesswomen: Meta Wood (ReMax), Carolyn Touhey (Two Eagles Lodge), Chelsea Bell, Jenny Deters (Design Therapy), and one anonymous (but equally amazing) participant. The online auction closes on June 30th and features some amazing prizes donated by many local businesses! Register to bid and view the items.

The HOME Team

This team has done a variety of mini-fundraisers and is comprised of Habitat employees Terri Perrin, Karen Bezaire and Cady Corman, as well as friends of Habitat; Tiffany Shelley and Janice Bernhard.

Their latest effort is a Facebook auction of 'Serena' a lovingly handcrafted Paverpol sculpture with a retail value of $180. (Pictured above.) This 14-inch tall piece has been generously donated by mixed media artist Angela TerMarsch of Empurpled Wares, Courtenay. (Thank you, Angela!)  They are having some fun finding her a new home AND raising money to support affordable homeownership for local families. Place a bid on the Facebook post on the Habitat for Humanity Facebook page. Bids will close at midnight on June 23rd, 2018. When it is time to send her to her new home, the winner may pay through the online campaign.

successfully 7+

Successfully Seven+ Team

This is a group of eight Comox Valley Women's Business Network (CVWBN) entrepreneurs who are passionate about helping other women and their families succeed. They are all proud to be members of the CVWBN, the main sponsor for Women Build 2018. Their goal set to raise $4000+, largely through one-on-one canvassing of their customers, colleagues, friends, and family. As of June 8th, they are at $3,740, so they are just shy of their goal!

Team leader Linda Graceffo (Sparkling Graphics) says; “Please join us in making a donation towards Women Build. We all enjoy the occasional glass of wine and raise a toast to your generous contribution. Cheers!”

Other members include Theresa Brulotte (Balanced Being), Donna Lafontaine (Comox Valley Record), Deanna Papineau (Deanna’s Aromatherapy Reiki Healing), Donna Clairmont (Clairmont’s Custom Draperies), Sue Johnston (Home SOULutions Remediation), Bobbie Norton (Nygard Style Direct), and Carol Elliot (12 Yellow Aprons).

Bombshell Building Brigade

The team says that they are ‘building with a backbone and a heart!’ One of their main fundraisers was selling strawberry plants form Raincoast Farms… and they raised $657 for this berry good cause.

Team member Courtenay Hutton signed up as “A Berry Good Cause’ and says: “This campaign is about more than building houses for people who need shelter, it's about building community and giving very deserving people a chance to realize their true potential.  If we come together and build a healthy, thriving community that leaves no one behind, we will all prosper from the by-products that will create; joy, abundance, consciousness, and connectedness.  Mother Theresa says it best ‘It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.’”

McQuillan clan

The McQuillan Clan

The McQuillan clan were pioneers who lived on the Lake Trail build site from 1937 to 2012. (They raised 12 children and the oldest son was killed in WWII at the age of 22. There are currently 9 original children alive today. Most of the McQuillan clan still live on Vancouver Island. The McQuillan clan are thrilled that there will once again be many families with children enjoying this property.

Team Captain, Maureen Glowasky (Grace Cosmetics) has been fundraising the good old-fashioned way…. knocking on doors and asking her friends, family, and neighbours to help out.

The La-Z-Girls Team

This is Courtenay's local Island La-Z-Boy team, with support from their family of stores in Nanaimo and Victoria. Please help them support our local community. The team is led by store manager  Diana Graham.

OWN - Courtenay

‘OWN’ stands for the ‘Orange Women Network’ and this is a team of women from Home Depot! Most of their fundraising is being done ‘in-house’, with the support of Home Depot.

Simply shopping at Home Depot is one way you can support this team!

bunco team

The Bunco Broads

These gals were on a roll with their multi-family garage sale held in May. They raised $1,325 and then donated all of the leftover items to the ReStore. So it was truly a win-win for everyone! Well done, ladies!

warier women

Warrior Women

Lead by Vicki Willems (Arbonne). As a member of CVWBN and a Christian, Vicki says that Women Build has given her the opportunity to give back to the community and help families who need a hand up, not a handout.

girl and ahmmer

Hammerin’ Hunnies

This team has five members and all of them have signed up anonymously.  We could look up their names but have decided if they want to be incognito … that’s just fine with us! (We can keep a secret!) They have already raised $500 so, whatever they are planning, we encourage them to keep up the good work!
